Interdisciplinary Fieldcourse in the Indian Himalayas

In October 2013, 20 third year students from Geography and Biosciences participated in the College's third interdisciplinary field course to Sikkim in the Indian Himalayas. The field course provides a unique opportunity for students to explore the relationship between the physical and social environments during a two week stay near the capital city of Gangtok.

Third Year BSc Zoology Student Invited to Cardiff County Council’s Environmental Scrutiny Committee

Ellie Meloy, a BSc Zoology student, was invited to give a presentation to Cardiff City and County Council’s Environmental Scrutiny Committee along with Julian Rees, the Operations Director of International Bee Research Association (IBRA). “The aim was to highlight the importance of bees, habitats and biodiversity and the implications of reducing the mowing of road side verges and wildflower areas in Cardiff on the bee population. My role was to finish the presentation with a 20 minute talk about my research with a Q&A afterwards. My dissertation project in the summer entailed a 10 week study, monitoring Social bumblebee species at Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve (SSSI, SAC, SPA, RAMSAR).”

Swansea University Student Takes Lobster Research Across the Pond

The Department of Mathematics were thrilled at the number of First Class Honours degrees achieved by their students in the summer.

Three geography undergraduates took part in a fieldwork expedition to the Colorado Plateau in September, accompanied by Geraint Owen and Kath Ficken (Geography) and Dr Gerry Bryant from Dixie State University, St George, Utah. After four days of field class, the students collected data for their final-year dissertations at a site just outside Page, Arizona, on the edge of Lake Powell.

PhD Biological Sciences student, Charlotte Davies has received funding allowing her to take her research project ‘Health status of the European lobster Homarus gammarus’ to Canada. Charlotte, who is part of the Aquatic Pathobiology group supervised by Professor Andrew F Rowley, has just entered the third year of her studies.

BA Geography Student’s Placement with the Welsh Government

The year-long work placement undertaken at the Welsh Government provided Michael Hopkins with an ideal opportunity to put his skills and interests into practice. “My interest in, and passion for, social, cultural and economic geography allowed me to become fully engaged with the role, and the fact that I was dealing with a primarily economic concept in Regeneration, allowed me to address and pursue my interests. Throughout the duration of my placement at the Welsh Government, I was involved of a number of capital and revenue projects, but the most time-consuming and demanding project was that of the West Rhyl Housing Improvement Project.“

Biology Student Wins ‘Horse of the Year Show’ Prize

PhD Geography Scholar’s Fellowship with the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology

“On 19th June, golden Horse of the Year Show ticket in hand, a five hour journey to Cheshire County Show behind us and the prospect of a five hour journey home, somehow the 8th of October seemed so far away. Nevertheless it came around quickly, far quicker than we’re ever prepared for!! Winning the class was a dream come true and surpassed all our hopes and expectations. We had not even dared dream of being champion and so to take the tricolour was a fairy tale. I can only say a huge thank you to him and to all those who have helped us along the way.” Marged Simons, BSc Biology.

Steve Aston, PhD NERC scholar (and BSc Geography graduate), recently completed a fellowship with the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST). POST’s remit is to help parliamentarians examine science and technology issues, through briefings, events and assisting Select Committees.

“My main job at POST was to write a briefing on means of removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. “

The undergraduate Geology Society have organised an exciting programme of activities for the session and have already held two successful field meetings, to Big Pit National Coal-Mining Museum and to the dinosaur footprints site at Sully. TEACHING DEVELOPMENTS

Online Welcome for New Students in Mathematics

We are again this summer taking part in an innovative scheme to help students with the transition from school to university mathematics. All students who have confirmed their place to study mathematics in Swansea will be given access to a newly developed online learning area. This website will provide students with access to revision materials to help them prepare for studying after the summer break and also forums to meet other students who will be coming to Swansea in September. This has been compiled with the help of MEI (Mathematics and Education in Industry) who are an independent charity committed to improving mathematics education.

New Geology Fieldwork Module at Level One

Earth Science in the Field is a new module at level one for students studying BSc Physical Earth Science. This degree scheme emphasises the study of geology alongside physical geography and in place of 20 credits of human geography, students take the new module. At the core of the new module are two weekends of fieldwork in south-west Wales.

Success in the New Physics Teaching Laboratory Suite

Great National Student Survey Results for Mathematics

Our part-time Foundation Degree in Computer Science is funded by the EU’s Convergence European Social Fund through the Welsh Government. Those in the private sector living and/or working in the Convergence Region of Wales (West Wales and Valleys), can access funded places on the course. Foundation Degrees are distinct higher education qualifications combining academic and work-based learning and offer a flexible way for students to gain a degree, whilst in employment. "I'm looking for my career in the manufacturing industry to grow. Information Technology is vital to all our operations.”

Now being in their second year of use the new Physics/College of Science Undergraduate Teaching laboratories really begin to shine - for the first time in many years the students affirm in their feedback to staff that they are really enjoying practical work now.  Comments from Open Day parents and youngsters  such as "... these are the best teaching laboratories we have seen in the UK during visits ..." are not uncommon.  This perception was equally emphasised by the IOP during their Accreditation visit last Spring.  

Every year, in every University in the country, final-year students are asked for their views about their course and their University, and how satisfied they are with both. This year, the Mathematics Department scored incredibly well, with just one student, out of the 57 respondents, disagreeing with the statement that they were satisfied overall with their experience at University. As well as being very satisfied with their overall experience, the survey highlighted some particular strengths of the Swansea Mathematics department, with 95% of the respondents agreeing that they were able to contact staff when they needed to, and 100% agreeing that assessment arrangements and marking were fair.

We are very pleased with this recognition of the high priority we put on looking after our students and treating them fairly.

The Wild Side of Swansea

Inspirational Mathematics Workshop delivered by the Further Mathematics Support Programme

TibetXChange - Tibetan Youth Exchange Programme

The Department of Biosciences has recently provided local primary school pupils with the opportunity to explore the wild side of Swansea. Pupils at Ysgol Gynradd Bryn Tawe spent the morning investigating the animals living in the mudflats of Swansea Bay, and were astounded to discover such a variety of life in a seemingly barren habitat. The pupils also used night vision camera traps to record the activity of the nocturnal foxes that live on Singleton Campus, and were fortunate to see several foxes and observe their behaviour.

Dr Jeff Giansiracusa delivered a fascinating Mathematics workshop to pupils from Cwrt Sart Community School, Briton Ferry.  The workshop, which was developed and delivered by Further Mathematics Support Programme, was entitled “The 4th Dimension and beyond” gave the pupils the opportunity to see another side to mathematics and they enjoyed working through a number of concepts.

TibetXChange is a youth exchange programme between students from Swansea University and young Tibetans living in the Indian state of Sikkim which is located in the Himalayan foothills on the border with Tibet. The idea for the TibetXChange Programme came about when students from the College of Science travelled to Sikkim in October 2013 for an interdisciplinary fieldcourse and met with young Tibetans living in the capital Gangtok. Many were shocked to learn about the situation facing the people of Tibet and the threat to Tibetan culture, religion and identity for the first time and returned to Swansea determined to do something to create an opportunity for young Tibetans to talk about their country and its future.

Swansea Science Summer School

When? Summer schools and science taster days throughout 2013/14
Where? College of Science, Swansea University
Who? Year 10 and Year 12 pupils from Swansea and surrounding areas

The College of Science will be running a series of taster days and week-long schools in bioscience, computer science, geography, maths and physics between now and March 2015. This is following on from a smaller summer school scheme in 2013. We hope to host up to 200 pupils in Years 10 and 12 (aged between 14 and 17), and give them valuable, hands-on experience of carrying out real scientific experiments with academic staff in a research laboratory. We want to ‘bring science to life’, with workshops such as ‘Mathematics for jugglers’ and ‘Hunting for exoplanets’.

Putting People in their Place

This is one of the eight projects undertaken over the last three years by the Choice Project, based in the Social Geography Department, working in partnership with Shock N Awe Performance Company with young people who are for some reason at risk of exclusion, to deepen their engagement with education and training. It was funded from the Arts Council of Wales and the ESF “Reach the Heights” initiative.

Multi-award-winning playwright and director Greg Cullen led workshops in Swansea, Cardiff, Abergavenny, Caernarfon, Ammanford and Mold. Each group of young people was challenged to make a film in a week with the starting point of their immediate environment and the people who inhabit it.

Institute of Physics Christmas Lectures at Swansea

An audience of around 150 packed the Grove Theatre at Swansea University on the evening of Thursday 7th November to hear Dr Chris North, Cardiff Astronomer and Co-Presenter of BBC's Sky at Night, describe the Herschel Telescope Mission and some of the scientific highlights it has uncovered.

Chris described the background to the mission and how this special telescope which peers into the infra-red end of the spectrum was constructed, before treating us to some stunning images of galaxies near and far. The audience remained enthusiastic to the end, and Chris was quizzed for around 20 minutes after his presentation was over.

On 15 October, the EnAlgae project held an open day at its algal biotechnology research facilities at Swansea University. Guests were able to take a tour of the facilities, view microalgae under a microscope, and also see how algae are being grown, harvested and converted into bioenergy and other products.  A computer modelling station allowed guests to play a ‘splat the algae’ game and the event was rounded off with an evening drinks reception.

There was a broad spectrum of attendees from industry and academia to general public and the media. About 40 people in total attended to find out how algae research is helping address reliance on unsustainable fossil fuel sources. Led by Dr Robin Shields and Dr Shaun Richardson in the Department of Bioscience, EnAlgae is a Strategic Initiative of the INTERREG IVB North West Europe programme which funds projects that support transnational cooperation. The programme's aim is to find innovative ways to make the most of territorial knowledge and assets to tackle shared problems of the member states and regions of NW Europe.

 

The first week in December saw over 500 schoolchildren, over two days, pack the campus’ Taliesin Theatre for the annual Institute of Physics (IOP) Schools Lectures, which have become a tradition at Swansea as the festive season approaches.

This year Dr Laura Thomas spoke to enthusiastic audiences on both days on “Defying Gravity – make physics your launch pad”. 

The afternoon lectures were given by Dr Mark Lewney (the Rock Doctor) and Prof. Pete Vukusic, from Exeter University.

Swansea University Gains Membership of European Connected Health

Maths behind Natural Pesticides that Help Biodiversity

The Wales Institute of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (WIMCS) has received further funding from the Welsh Government through the National Science Academy (NSA) to enable the subsidised delivery of its Roadshow ‘Maths Apps’. Working with our main partner Science Made Simple, WIMCS aims to present the Roadshow at 32 Secondary Schools across Wales in 2014.

The 50 minute ‘Maths Apps’ Careers Roadshow was developed with our partners Science Made Simple with EPSRC funding. In filmed interviews they explain why Maths is important to their work, and the Science Made Simple Roadshow Presenter reinforces the Maths messages in interactive demonstrations that use practical applications of Maths. The jobs are wide-ranging – from running one’s own business, to sports science, to hospital radiology, to developing computer games, to vehicle design.

 

Technology-driven healthcare is a global vision, and there is no doubt that Swansea University, with its world-class research facilities and significant talent base, is rapidly growing its position in the global medical technology sector.

The University’s recent membership to the European Connected Health Alliance (ECHA) will give this growth a boost, with access to a unique partnership of industry, academia and government bodies, including some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, the NHS and key healthcare regulatory bodies. Jay Doyle, Techealth Impact Facilitator in the Department of Computer Science said: “The University has a unique critical mass of technology-driven healthcare projects. ‘Techealth’ is a rapidly developing strand for the University, encompassing world-leading research in medical device safety and Big Data, through projects such as CHI+MED (Computer-Human Interaction for Medical Devices, and CIPHER (Centre for Improving Population Health through e-Health Research).

Professor Tariq Butt, Department of Biosciences talks to Stefan Gates on BBC Two’s Ecomaths (Key Stage 3), about the maths of scientific discovery using concentrations in standard form and cumulative frequency graphs, and interpreting longitudinal data in a unique fungus trial at Swansea University. The programme will be available shortly on the BBC Two website.

Last year, Professor Butt also spoke to Stefan Gates about his team’s development of naturally occurring fungi as an alternative to chemical pesticides.

Geologists’ Association South Wales Group

Coastal Otter Survey

The Geologists’ Association South Wales Group continues to share its winter lecture meetings between Swansea University and Cardiff. The first lecture of the 2013-2014 session took place in the Wallace Building in October, when Dr Ian Skilling of the University of South Wales gave a fascinating talk entitled “Hot and cold: Volcanic eruptions beneath ice,” including some stunning images of volcanic features in Iceland and Canada. In December, Prof. Andy Gale of the University of Portsmouth will talk on “The evolution and history of starfishes” and in February Professor Joe Cartwright of the University of Oxford will talk on “Fraccing: Mythology, propaganda and geomechanics”. 

The Swansea Ecology Research Team in the Department of Biosciences are working on a Coastal Otter Project to understand how important coastal areas have now become for otters. The team are working with a green surfboard maker in Cornwall, ‘Otter’, to help promote the Coastal Otter Survey.

Geology Visitors to Gower

Geraint Owen (Geography) welcomed a group of visiting geologists from Bath Geological Society, West of England Geologists’ Association and Bristol Naturalists’ Society to the Gower peninsula in October for a day exploring the geology of Gower. Despite a strong wind, the group spent a wonderful day at Caswell Bay and Rhossili.

Best Practice on Age Assessment in Europe

In September 2013 Professor Heaven Crawley was invited by the Council of Europe to attend a meeting organised by the Ministry of the Interior in Budapest to explore the issue of how best to assess the age of separated asylum seeking children and to consider their draft guidelines on best practice. Professor Crawley (Department of Geography’s Centre for Migration Policy Research) has worked extensively on age disputes and the process of age assessment and has previously been invited to expert meetings organised by the Separated Children in Europe Programme in Brussels and Council of Europe in Kyiv. Research, led by Professor Heaven Crawley has examined why age is disputed, concentrating on the process by which age is assessed and questioning dominant concepts of ‘childhood’, as well as the potentially damaging impact of actual and proposed methods for assessing age.

“Leaders are the Most Enthusiastic in a Group” claims Andy King

Dr Andy King, Department of Biosciences gave an interview to the French magazine L’Express about the characteristics of being a good leader and making good decisions. The French President, Francois Hollande is often criticized for his lack of charisma and rash decisions. Dr King, who studies animal and human behaviour was asked what rules the Elysee should adhere to when making decisions.

Researchers from the College of Science recently took part in a Welsh-perspective ‘Science to Policy’ briefing on the IPCC 5th Assessment of Climate Change Science. As one of four member institutions of the Climate Change Consortium of Wales, Swansea University is extremely active in the field of climate change, with researchers in Geography, Biosciences, Environmental Law, and Health Sciences, and over 100 peer-reviewed articles in the last three years. As Swansea C3W Institutional Director and Cryosphere Thematic Cluster Leader, Professor Tavi Murray (pictured far left) from the Glaciology Group was invited to speak on the briefing Expert Panel.

The Algal Biotechnology for Advanced Bio-Products project, based in the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Research in the Department of Biosciences, aims to enhance current expertise and infrastructure towards lucrative expanding markets for advanced algae-based bio-products and processes. Funded via the Welsh Government and ERDF, the project comprises a programme of technology development and knowledge transfer that will benefit an industry supply chain encompassing advanced manufacturers of photo-bioreactors and related lighting and control gear; process modelling specialists; algae biomass producers (including large enterprises with an emphasis on waste bioremediation); bio-process technologists; and end users spanning Life Sciences & Health, Advanced Engineering & Materials, and Food & Farming.

Professor Gert Aarts of the Theoretical Particle Physics Group at Swansea University is using HPC Wales’ systems to assist him in carrying out fundamental research in elementary particle physics. This research will increase our understanding of how the universe around us works, and has recently been recognised with a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award which is intended to assist UK universities attract and retain scientists of outstanding achievement and potential.

Landmark Research Project on Migration and Settlement in Scotland

In November 2013, the Department of Geography started a joint research project with the University of Glasgow on migration and settlement in Scotland. This high-profile interdisciplinary research attracted £1.2M in funding from the Economic and Social Research Council for a longitudinal qualitative study of ‘Experiences of social security and prospects for long-term settlement in Scotland amongst migrants from Central Eastern Europe and Former Soviet Union’. Using a groundbreaking combination of innovative methodologies and theoretical synthesis, the research team led by Dr Sergei Shubin at Swansea explores the lived realities and experiences of migrants and assist in the development of relevant and effective policy and practice.

OTHER NEWS AND EVENTS

Honorary Professor wins Nobel Prize for Physics

Professor Peter Higgs has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in recognition of his work on the famously elusive boson that bears his name which scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) triumphantly discovered in July last year. The prize was awarded to him jointly with Francois Englert.

Professor Higgs has strong ties to Swansea University, and in July 2008 was awarded a Fellowship during the degree ceremony for the School of Physical Sciences.

He has previously given lectures at Swansea University during National Science Week and has taught current members of the Physics Department as research students including Professor Simon Hands FLSW, previously of CERN and now Director of Research at the College of Science.

Professor Simon Hands goes to Washington

After three days intensive external auditing across the campus Swansea University has been awarded the EcoCampus PLATINUM award and the international standard ISO 1400 for the management of its environmental systems. Swansea is the first University in Wales to achieve the top Platinum award, and only the thirteenth organisation in the UK as a whole.  This helps the University with its legal compliance, Green League score, Sustainability Strategy, and represents the first international standard that the University has achieved across all Colleges and administrative functions.

A staff development event was held in Geography in October by the outgoing (Helen Walkington) and incoming (Anne Wheeler) subject specialists for GEES (Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences) at the Higher Education Academy. One presentation addressed the resources available to lecturers through the Higher Education Academy and a second considered “Students as researchers”, exploring the many ways in which research and teaching can be integrated, ranging from teaching about research findings, through attaching students to research projects, to helping students to present their own research findings through posters, blogs or even broadcast television. The event was well attended and demonstrates a commitment in the College of Science to work with bodies such as the Higher Education Academy through SALT (the Swansea Academy for Learning and Teaching) to further raise the excellent standards of teaching and student experience across the College.

For the second year running College of Science Director of Research, Simon Hands was invited to be a member of the Panel reviewing the Theoretical Particle Physics programme in US universities for the US Department of Energy. He attended the Panel meeting in Washington DC in mid November.

25-year Reunion for Geology Graduates

Geography Graduate in Regional Final of Early Career Geologist Award

John Matthews’ birthday celebrations

The last weekend of September saw a reunion of Geology students from Swansea University who graduated in 1988, 25 years ago. About 15 former students were able to attend, from as far afield as Australia, and others sent their apologies but were unable to get away from key jobs for multinational companies linked to the petroleum industry. Geraint Owen (now in Geography) showed them round the Wallace Building (known as the Natural Sciences Building in the late 1980s), but they declined the opportunity to relive one of their final-year lectures on advanced clastic sedimentology! They spent a nostalgic day on the Gower peninsula and hope to repeat the event in 2018.

Hannah Lee (graduated Geography, 2013) competed in the Southern Wales regional final of the Early Career Geologist Award, a competition organised by The Geological Society of London. She presented a summary of her undergraduate Geography dissertation, entitled “Variability and facies control of soft-sediment deformation in the Applecross Formation of the late Proterozoic Torridon Group, Torridon, NW Scotland”, which had been commended as one of the best physical geography dissertations submitted in 2012-2013. Unfortunately Hannah didn’t win through to the national final, facing stiff competition from an industry geologist and two PhD students from Cardiff University, but she came a worthy equal second place.

Staff and former students from the Geography Department joined in birthday celebrations for John Matthews, Emeritus Professor of Physical Geography. John continues to contribute to the Austria and Mallorca geography undergraduate field courses, and for 42 years has been pursuing ground-breaking research into the physical geography of southern Norway, through the Jotunheimen Research Expeditions. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the inter-disciplinary journal “The Holocene”.

Aeth tri myfyriwr daearyddiaeth israddedig ar daith maes i Lwyfandir Colorado ym mis Medi, yng nghwmni Geraint Owen a Kath Ficken (Daearyddiaeth) a Dr Gerry Bryant o Brifysgol Dixie State, St George, Utah. Ar ôl pedwar diwrnod o ddosbarth maes, casglodd y tîm ddata ar gyfer eu traethodau hir blwyddyn olaf ar safle yng nghyffiniau Page, Arizona, ar lannau Llyn Powell. 

Mae Charlotte Davies, myfyriwr PhD Gwyddorau Biolegol, wedi derbyn cyllid i ganiatáu iddi fynd â'i phrosiect ymchwil, ‘Statws iechyd y cimwch Ewropeaidd, Homarus gammarus’ i Ganada. Lleoliad gyda Llywodraeth Cymru i Fyfyriwr BA Daearyddiaeth

Roedd lleoliad blwyddyn gyda Llywodraeth Cymru wedi rhoi cyfle delfrydol i Michael Hopkins roi ei sgiliau a'i ddiddordebau ar waith. "Roedd y rôl yn gweddu'n arbennig o dda â'm diddordebau.  Dwi'n teimlo'n angerddol am ddaearyddiaeth gymdeithasol, ddiwylliannol, ac economaidd, ac roedd y pwyslais ar Adfywio, cysyniad economaidd yn bennaf, yn ystod y lleoliad yn caniatáu i mi ddilyn fy niddordebau. Trwy gydol fy nghyfnod gyda Llywodraeth Cymru, roeddwn yn ymwneud â nifer o brosiectau cyfalaf a refeniw, ond y prosiect mwyaf arwyddocaol, o ran amser a'r gofynion arnaf, oedd Prosiect Gwella Tai Gorllewin y Rhyl."

Myfyriwr Bioleg yn ennill Gwobr yn Sioe 'Ceffyl y Flwyddyn'

Myfyriwr PhD Daearyddiaeth yn cael Cymrodoriaeth yn Swyddfa Gwyddoniaeth a Thechnoleg y Senedd

Ar 19 Mehefin, â'm tocyn aur i Sioe 'Ceffyl y Flwyddyn' yn fy llaw a thaith pum awr i Sioe Sirol Caer wedi'i chwpla,  a chyda thaith pum awr arall i gyrraedd adref o'n blaenau, roedd 8 Hydref ymhell yn y dyfodol. Fodd bynnag, daeth yn sydyn iawn - llawer cynt nag yr oeddem ni'n disgwyl! Roedd ennill yn y dosbarth fel gwireddu breuddwyd, ac yn rhagori ar ein holl obeithion a disgwyliadau. Doedden ni ddim hyd yn oed wedi meiddio breuddwydio am fod yn bencampwyr, ac felly roedd cipio'r faner drilliw'n gwbl anhygoel. Mae Steve Aston, myfyriwr PhD Cyngor Ymchwil yr Amgylchedd Naturiol (a graddedig BSc Daearyddiaeth), wedi cwblhau cymrodoriaeth gyda Swyddfa Gwyddoniaeth a Thechnoleg y Senedd yn ddiweddar. Cymdeithas Daeareg

Mae'r Gymdeithas Daeareg israddedig wedi trefnu rhaglen gyffrous o weithgareddau ar gyfer y sesiwn.  Cynhaliwyd dau gyfarfod maes llwyddiannus eisoes, y cyntaf yn yr Amgueddfa Glo Genedlaethol, sef Pwll Mawr, a'r llall yn safle olion troed y dinosoriaid yn Sili. Mae'r Gymdeithas wedi mentro i'r byd trydar hefyd: cewch ei dilyn ar @SwanseaGeolSoc. 

DATBLYGIADAU ADDYSGU

Croeso Arlein i Fyfyrwyr Mathemateg Newydd

Unwaith eto'r haf hwn, rydym yn rhan o gynllun arloesol i helpu myfyrwyr i bontio o fathemateg yr ysgol i fathemateg y brifysgol. Caiff pob myfyriwr sydd wedi cadarnhau ei fod yn dod i Abertawe i astudio mathemateg fynediad at ardal ddysgu arlein sydd newydd gael ei datblygu. Bydd y wefan yn golygu bod gan fyfyrwyr fynediad at ddeunydd adolygu i'w helpu i baratoi ar gyfer astudio ar ôl gwyliau'r haf.  Hefyd, bydd fforymau lle cânt gwrdd â myfyrwyr eraill a ddaw i Abertawe ym mis Medi. Datblygwyd y wefan gyda chymorth MEI (Mathemateg ac Addysg mewn Diwydiant), elusen annibynnol sydd wedi ymrwymo i wella addysg mathemateg.

Modiwl Gwaith Maes Daeareg Newydd ar gyfer Lefel Un

Mae Gwyddor y Ddaear yn y Maes yn fodiwl lefel un newydd ar gyfer myfyrwyr sy'n astudio'r BSc Gwyddor Ffisegol y Ddaear. Mae'r cynllun gradd hwn yn pwysleisio astudio daeareg yn ogystal â daearyddiaeth ffisegol.  Yn lle dilyn 20 credyd mewn daearyddiaeth ddynol, mae myfyrwyr yn dilyn y modiwl newydd. Wrth graidd y modiwl, mae dau benwythnos o waith maes yn ne-orllewin Cymru.

Llwyddiant y Labordai Dysgu Ffiseg Newydd

Canlyniadau Gwych i Fathemateg o'r Arolwg Cenedlaethol o Fyfyrwyr

Ariennir ein Gradd Sylfaen Cyfrifiadureg ran-amser gan Gronfa Cydgyfeirio Cronfa Gymdeithasol Ewrop trwy Lywodraeth Cymru. Caiff unigolion yn y sector preifat sy'n byw neu'n gweithio yn Ardal Gydgyfeirio Cymru (Gorllewin Cymru a'r Cymoedd) eu hariannu i astudio'r cwrs. Mae Gradd Sylfaen yn gymhwyster addysg uwch penodol sy'n cyfuno dysgu academaidd a dysgu yn y gweithle, ac mae'n cynnig ffordd hyblyg i fyfyrwyr ennill gradd tra eu bod yn gweithio. "Dwi am i fy ngyrfa yn y diwydiant gweithgynhyrchu ffynnu. Mae Technoleg Gwybodaeth yn allweddol i bopeth a wnawn."

Mae labordai dysgu newydd yr Adran Ffiseg / Coleg Gwyddoniaeth yn cael eu defnyddio am yr ail flwyddyn bellach - ac am y tro cyntaf ers achau mae adborth y myfyrwyr yn cadarnhau eu bod yn mwynhau eu gwaith ymarferol.  Nid yw sylwadau megis "...dyma'r labordai dysgu gorau a welon ni yn y Deyrnas Unedig..." yn anghyffredin gan rieni a phobl ifanc ar Ddiwrnodau Agored. Roedd y Sefydliad Ffiseg yn pwysleisio'r un pwynt yn ystod ei ymweliad achredu, y gwanwyn diwethaf.

Bob blwyddyn, ym mhob Prifysgol yn y wlad, gofynnir i fyfyrwyr yn eu blwyddyn olaf fynegi eu barn am eu cwrs a'u prifysgol, gan nodi pa mor fodlon ydynt ar y ddau. Eleni, cafodd yr Adran Mathemateg sgôr anhygoel o dda - dim ond un myfyriwr, o'r 57 a ymatebodd, oedd yn anghytuno â'r datganiad ei fod yn fodlon, yn gyffredinol, ar ei brofiad yn y Brifysgol. Yn ogystal â bod yn fodlon iawn ar eu profiad yn gyffredinol, roedd yr arolwg yn amlygu ambell i gryfder penodol Adran Mathemateg Abertawe.  Roedd 95% yn cytuno eu bod yn gallu cysylltu â staff pan fo angen, a 100% yn cytuno bod y trefniadau asesu a marcio'n deg.

Rydym yn hynod o falch bod y flaenoriaeth uchel a roddwn i ofalu am ein myfyrwyr a'u trin yn deg wedi'i chydnabod.

YMGYSYLLTU CYMUNEDOL A GWEITHGARWCH YMESTYN ALLAN

Gweithdy Mathemateg Ysbrydoledig, wedi ei ddarparu gan y Rhaglen Gymorth Mathemateg Bellach

Rhaglen Gyfnewid Tibet ar gyfer Pobl Ifainc

Yn ddiweddar, mae'r Adran Biowyddoniaeth wedi rhoi cyfle i blant ysgolion cynradd lleol archwilio ochr wyllt Abertawe. Treuliodd plant Ysgol Gynradd Bryn Tawe fore'n archwilio'r anifeiliaid sy'n byw yn nhraethellau Bae Abertawe, ac fe’u syfrdanwyd i weld sut amrywiaeth bywyd, mewn cynefin oedd yn edrych mor ddiffrwyth. Hefyd, roedd y disgyblion yn defnyddio maglau camera gydag offer gweld yn y tywyllwch i recordio gweithgarwch y llwynogod nosol sy'n byw ar gampws Singleton.  Roeddent yn ddigon ffodus i weld sawl llwynog, a gwylio eu hymddygiad.

Cyflwynodd Dr Jeff Giansiracusa weithdy Mathemateg diddorol i ddisgyblion o Ysgol Gymunedol Cwrt Sart, Llansawel. Teitl y gweithdy, a ddatblygwyd ac a gyflwynwyd gan y Rhaglen Gymorth Mathemateg Bellach, oedd "Y 4ydd Dimensiwn a thu hwnt".  Ynddo, cafodd y disgyblion gyfle i weld agwedd arall ar fathemateg, ac fe wnaethon nhw fwynhau gweithio drwy nifer o gysyniadau.

Mae Rhaglen Gyfnewid ar gael rhwng myfyrwyr Prifysgol Abertawe a phobl ifanc o Dibet sy'n byw yn nhalaith Sikkim yn India yng ngodrefryniau Mynyddoedd Himalaia ar y ffin â Thibet. Cafwyd y syniad ar gyfer y rhaglen pan aeth myfyrwyr o'r Coleg Gwyddoniaeth i Sikkim ym mis Hydref 2013 am gwrs gwaith maes rhyngddisgyblaethol.  Cwrddon nhw â phobl ifanc o Dibet sy'n byw yn y brifddinas, Gangtok. Sioc i lawer ohonynt oedd dysgu am y tro cyntaf am sefyllfa pobl Tibet, a'r bygythiad i ddiwylliant, crefydd a hunaniaeth Tibet, a daethant yn ôl i Abertawe yn benderfynol o wneud rhywbeth i greu cyfle i bobl ifanc o Dibet siarad am eu gwlad a'i dyfodol.

Ysgol Haf Gwyddoniaeth Abertawe

Pwy? Disgyblion Blwyddyn 10 a Blwyddyn 12 o Abertawe a'r cyffiniau

Bydd y Coleg Gwyddoniaeth yn cynnal nifer o ddiwrnodau blasu, ac ysgolion wythnos, mewn biowyddoniaeth, cyfrifiadureg, daearyddiaeth, mathemateg, a ffiseg rhwng nawr a mis Mawrth 2015. Mae hyn yn dilyn rhaglen lai uchelgeisiol o ysgolion haf yn 2013. Rydym yn gobeithio y daw hyd at 200 o ddisgyblion ym Mlynyddoedd 10 a 12 (rhwng 14 oed a 17 oed).  Byddwn yn rhoi profiad gwerthfawr ac ymarferol iddynt o gynnal arbrofion gwyddonol go iawn mewn labordy ymchwil gyda staff academaidd. Rydym am ddod â gwyddoniaeth yn fyw iddynt, gyda gweithdai megis 'Mathemateg i Siwglwyr', a 'Chwilio am ecsoblanedau'.

Rhoi Pobl yn eu Lle

Mae hyn yn un o'r wyth prosiect a gynhaliwyd yn ystod y tair blynedd ddiwethaf gan y Prosiect Dewis, yn yr Adran Daearyddiaeth Gymdeithasol, gan weithio ar y cyd a'r cwmni perfformio 'Shock N Awe' ar gyfer pobl ifanc sydd, am ryw reswm neu'i gilydd, mewn perygl o gael eu heithrio, er mwyn dwysáu eu cysylltiad ag addysg a hyfforddiant. Fe'i hariannwyd gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, a menter "Cyrraedd y Nod" o dan Gronfa Gymdeithasol yr Undeb Ewropeaidd.

Roedd Greg Cullen, dramodydd a chyfarwyddydd arobryn, yn arwain gweithdai yn Abertawe, Caerdydd, Y Fenni, Caernarfon, Rhydaman, a'r Wyddgrug. Heriwyd pob grŵp o bobl ifanc i wneud ffilm mewn wythnos, a'r man cychwyn oedd eu hamgylchedd agos a'r bobl sy'n byw ynddo.

Arsyllfa Ofod Herschel: diwedd y dechrau

Diwrnod Agored EnAlgae

Darlithoedd Nadolig y Sefydliad Ffiseg yn Abertawe

Roedd Theatr Grove ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe dan ei sang, pan ddaeth rhyw 150 ar nos Iau, 7 Tachwedd, i glywed Dr Chris North, seryddwr o Gaerdydd ac un o gyd-gyflwynwyr y rhaglen 'The Sky at Night', yn disgrifio Cyrch Telesgop Herschel a rhai o'r uchelbwyntiau gwyddonol sydd wedi deillio o'i waith.

Disgrifiodd Chris gefndir y cyrch, a sut yr adeiladwyd y telesgop arbennig hwn sy'n gweithio yn is-goch y sbectrwm, cyn dangos nifer o ddelweddau trawiadol o alaethau agos a phell. Roedd y gynulleidfa'n frwd i'r diwedd, a chafodd Chris ei holi am ryw 20 munud ar ôl gorffen ei gyflwyniad.

Ar 15 Hydref, cynhaliodd prosiect EnAlgau ddiwrnod agored yn ei labordai ymchwil biodechnoleg algaidd ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe. Cafodd y gwesteion daith o gwmpas y labordai, cyfle i weld microalgâu dan ficrosgop, a chyfle i weld sut mae algâu'n cael eu tyfu, eu cynaeafu, a'u troi'n fioynni a chynnyrch eraill.  Roedd model cyfrifiadurol yn caniatáu i ymwelwyr chwarae gêm 'sblatio'r algâu', a diweddglo'r digwyddiad oedd derbyniad diodydd gyda'r hwyr.

Cafwyd amrediad eang o bobl yn bresennol o ddiwydiant a'r byd academaidd yn ogystal â'r cyhoedd a'r cyfryngau. Daeth tua 40 i gyd, i ddysgu sut mae ymchwil ar algâu'n ein helpu i fynd i'r afael â'r ddibyniaeth ar ffynonellau tanwydd ffosil anghynaladwy. Dan arweinyddiaeth Dr Robin Shields a Dr Shaun Richardson yn yr Adran Biowyddoniaeth, mae EnAlgae'n Fenter Strategol o fewn rhaglen INTERREG IVB Gogledd-orllewin Ewrop, sy'n ariannu prosiectau sy'n hyrwyddo cydweithredu trawswladol. Nod y rhaglen yw dod o hyd i ffyrdd arloesol i wneud y gorau o wybodaeth ac asedau tiriogaethol i fynd i'r afael â phroblemau sy'n gyffredinol ymhlith aelod-wladwriaethau a rhanbarthau gogledd-orllewin Ewrop. 

Yn ystod wythnos gyntaf mis Rhagfyr, heidiodd dros 500 o blant ysgol i Theatr Taliesin dros gyfnod o ddau ddiwrnod ar gyfer Darlithoedd i Ysgolion y Sefydliad Ffiseg, darlithoedd blynyddol sydd wedi dod yn draddodiadol yn Abertawe wrth i'r Nadolig agosáu.

Eleni, roedd Dr Laura Thomas yn annerch cynulleidfa frwd ar y ddau ddiwrnod ar y pwnc "Herio Disgyrchiant - ffiseg fel safle lansio".

Annog Astudio Mathemateg: Ailgychwyn Sioe Yrfaoedd Deithiol 'Apps Mathemateg' ar gyfer Ysgolion Uwchradd

Y Fathemateg y tu ôl i Blaladdwyr sy'n Helpu Bioamrywiaeth

Mae Sefydliad Gwyddorau Cyfrifiadurol a Mathemategol Cymru wedi derbyn cyllid gan Lywodraeth Cymru drwy'r Academi Wyddoniaeth Genedlaethol i alluogi darpariaeth gymorthdaledig ar gyfer ei Sioe Deithiol 'Apps Mathemateg'. Drwy weithio gyda'n prif bartner, 'Science Made Simple', mae'r Sefydliad yn bwriadu cyflwyno'r Sioe Deithiol mewn 32 o Ysgolion Uwchradd ar draws Cymru yn ystod 2014.

Datblygwyd y Sioe Deithiol 50 munud, 'Apps Mathemateg', gyda'n partneriaid 'Science Made Simple' gyda chyllid o'r Cyngor Ymchwil Peirianneg a'r Gwyddorau Ffisegol. Mewn cyfweliadau ar ffilm, mae nifer o unigolion yn esbonio paham bod Mathemateg yn bwysig i'w gwaith, ac mae'r Cyflwynydd yn atgyfnerthu'r negeseuon Mathemateg mewn arddangosiadau rhyngweithiol sy'n rhoi Mathemateg ar waith yn ymarferol. Mae'r swyddi mewn ystod eang, gan gynnwys rhedeg busnes, gwyddor chwaraeon, radioleg mewn ysbyty, datblygu gemau cyfrifiadur, a dylunio cerbydau.

Mae gofal iechyd a yrrir gan dechnoleg yn weledigaeth fyd-eang, ac nid oes unrhyw amheuaeth bod Prifysgol Abertawe, gyda'i chyfleusterau ymchwil o'r radd flaenaf a'i thalent sylweddol, yn tyfu yn y sector technoleg feddygol fyd-eang.

Rhoddwyd hwb i hyn pan ymunodd y Brifysgol yn ddiweddar â Chynghrair Iechyd Cysylltiedig Ewrop, sy'n rhoi mynediad at bartneriaeth unigryw o gwmnïau diwydiannol, cyrff academaidd, a chyrff llywodraethau, gan gynnwys rhai o gwmnïau fferyllol mwyaf y byd, y GIG, a chyrff rheoleiddio allweddol ym maes gofal iechyd. Dywedodd Jay Doyle, Hwylusydd Technoleg Iechyd yn yr Adran Cyfrifiadureg: "Mae gan y Brifysgol fàs critigol o brosiectau gofal iechyd a yrrir gan dechnoleg. Mae 'Iechyd Technegol' yn faes sy'n datblygu'n gyflym yn y Brifysgol, gan gwmpasu ymchwil sydd ar flaen y gad o ran diogelwch dyfeisiadau meddygol, Data Mawr, a phrosiectau megis CHI+MED (Rhyngweithio Cyfrifiadur-Dyn ar gyfer Dyfeisiadau Meddygol) a CIPHER (Canolfan Gwella Iechyd y Boblogaeth trwy Ymchwilio Cofnodion Electronig).

Mae'r Athro Tariq Butt o'r Adran Biowyddorau yn siarad â Stefan Gates ar raglen EcoMaths (Cyfnod Allweddol 3) BBC2 am fathemateg darganfod gwyddonol, gan ddefnyddio crynodiadau mewn ffurf safonol a graffiau amlder cronnol, a chan ddehongli data arhydol mewn arbrawf unigryw ar ffwng ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe. Bydd y rhaglen ar gael yn fuan ar wefan BBC2.

Y llynedd, roedd yr Athro Butt yn siarad â Stefan Gates am waith ei dîm yn datblygu ffwng naturiol yn ddewis amgen yn hytrach na defnyddio plaladdwyr cemegol.

Grwp De Cymru Cymdeithas y Daearegwyr

Arolwg Dyfrgwn Arfordirol

Mae Grŵp De Cymru Cymdeithas y Daearegwyr yn parhau i rannu ei chyfarfodydd darlith yn ystod y gaeaf rhwng prifysgolion Abertawe a Chaerdydd. Cynhaliwyd darlith gyntaf sesiwn 2013-2014 yn Adeilad Wallace ym mis Hydref, pan draddododd Dr Ian Skilling o Brifysgol De Cymru ddarlith gyfareddol "Hot and cold: Volcanic eruptions beneath ice", oedd yn cynnwys delweddau trawiadol o arweddion folcanig yng Ngwlad yr Iâ a Chanada. Ym mis Rhagfyr, bydd yr Athro Andy Gale o Brifysgol Portsmouth yn siarad am “The evolution and history of starfishes”, ac ym mis Chwefror, bydd yr Athro Joe Cartwright o Brifysgol Rhydychen yn siarad am “Fracking: Mythology, propaganda and geomechanics”. 

Mae Tîm Ymchwil Ecoleg Abertawe yn Adran y Biowyddorau'n gweithio ar Brosiect Dyfrgwn Arfordirol i geisio deall pa mor bwysig y mae ardaloedd arfordirol bellach i ddyfrgwn. Mae'r tîm yn gweithio gyda chwmni gwyrdd o'r enw 'Otter' - sy'n gwneud byrddau syrffio yng Nghernyw - i helpu hyrwyddo'r Arolwg Dyfrgwn Arfordirol.

YMCHWIL YN Y NEWYDDION

Arfer Gorau yn Ewrop o ran Asesu Oedran

Ym mis Medi 2013, cafodd yr Athro Heaven Crawley wahoddiad oddi wrth Gyngor Ewrop i fynd i gyfarfod a drefnwyd gan y Weinidogaeth Gartref ym Miwdapest i ystyried y ffordd orau o asesu oedran plant heb eu rhieni oedd yn ceisio lloches, ac i ystyried ei chyfarwyddyd drafft ar arfer gorau. Mae'r Athro Crawley (o Ganolfan Ymchwil Polisi Ymfudo'r Adran Daearyddiaeth) wedi gwneud gwaith helaeth ar anghydfodau ynghylch oedran a'r broses o asesu oedran, ac mae wedi ei gwahodd o'r blaen i gyfarfodydd arbenigol a drefnwyd ym Mrwsel gan y Rhaglen Plant wedi'u Gwahanu yn Ewrop, ac yn Kyiv gan Gyngor Ewrop. Biodechnoleg Algaidd ar gyfer Biogynnyrch Uwch

Gert Aarts yn siarad am Gyfrifiadura Perfformiad Uchel

Yn ddiweddar, aeth ymchwilwyr o Goleg Gwyddoniaeth Prifysgol Abertawe i sesiwn wybodaeth 'O Wyddoniaeth i Bolisi' o safbwynt Cymreig ar 5ed Asesiad y Panel Rhynglywodraethol ar Newid Hinsawdd. Mae Prifysgol Abertawe'n un o'r pedwar sefydliad sy'n aelodau Consortiwm Newid Hinsawdd Cymru.  Mae'r Brifysgol felly'n weithgar iawn o ran newid hinsawdd, gydag ymchwilwyr yn gweithio ym meysydd Daearyddiaeth, Y Biowyddorau, Cyfraith Amgylcheddol, a'r Gwyddorau Iechyd; a chyhoeddwyd dros 100 o erthyglau a adolygwyd gan gymheiriaid yn ystod y tair blynedd ddiwethaf. Cafodd yr Athro Tavi Murray, o'r Grŵp Rhewlifeg, sy'n Gyfarwyddydd Sefydliadol Abertawe ar gyfer y Consortiwm, ac sy'n arwain y Clwstwr Thematig ar y Cryosffer, wahoddiad i siarad ar y Panel Arbenigwyr yn y sesiwn wybodaeth.

Mae'r Prosiect Biodechnoleg Algaidd ar gyfer Biogynnyrch Uwch, yng Nghanolfan Ymchwil Dyfrol Cynaliadwy Adran y Biowyddorau, yn ceisio gwella ei arbenigedd cyfredol a'i isadeiledd er mwyn targedu marchnadoedd enillfawr newydd ar gyfer biogynnyrch a phrosesau uwch sy'n seiliedig ar algâu. Ariennir y prosiect gan Lywodraeth Cymru a Chronfa Datblygu Rhanbarthol yr Undeb Ewropeaidd.  Mae'n cynnwys rhaglen datblygu technoleg a throsglwyddo gwybodaeth y bydd nifer o gwmnïau yn y gadwyn gyflenwi'n gallu elwa arni, gan gynnwys gwneuthurwyr ffoto-bioadweithwyr a'r offer goleuo a rheoli perthynol; arbenigwyr modelu prosesau; cynhyrchwyr bio-màs algaidd (gan gynnwys mentrau mawr gyda phwyslais ar fioadfer gwastraff); technolegwyr biobrosesau; a defnyddwyr ym meysydd Gwyddorau Bywyd ac Iechyd, Peirianneg a Defnyddiau Uwch, ac Amaeth.

Mae'r Athro Gert Aarts o Adran Ffiseg Prifysgol Abertawe yn esbonio sut mae defnyddio Cyfrifiadura Perfformiad Uchel yn hanfodol i ymchwil.

Mae'r Athro Gert Aarts o'r Grŵp Ffiseg Gronynnau Ddamcaniaethol ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe yn defnyddio systemau Cyfrifiadura Perfformiad Uchel Cymru i'w gynorthwyo yn ei ymchwil sylfaenol i ffiseg gronynnau elfennol. Bydd yr ymchwil hwn yn gwella ein dealltwriaeth o sut mae'r bydysawd o'n cwmpas yn gweithio, ac mae wedi derbyn Gwobr Teilyngdod Ymchwil Wolfson y Gymdeithas Frenhinol yn ddiweddar, sydd â'r bwriad o helpu prifysgolion y Deyrnas Unedig i ddenu a chadw gwyddonwyr y mae eu cyflawniad a'u potensial yn eithriadol.

Prosiect Ymchwil Pwysig ar Ymfudo ac Anheddu yn yr Alban

Ym mis Tachwedd 2013, cychwynnwyd prosiect ymchwil ar y cyd rhwng yr Adran Daearyddiaeth a Phrifysgol Glasgow ar ymfudo ac anheddu yn yr Alban. Llwyddodd yr ymchwil rhyngddisgyblaethol uchel ei broffil i ddenu £1.2 miliwn o'r Cyngor Ymchwil Economaidd a Chymdeithasol ar gyfer astudiaeth ansoddol hydredol o 'Profiadau o sicrwydd cymdeithasol a'r rhagolygon ar gyfer byw yn yr Alban am y tymor hir ymhlith mewnfudwyr o Ganol Dwyrain Ewrop a'r Undeb Sofiet gynt'. Gan ddefnyddio cyfuniad arloesol o fethodolegau newydd a synthesis damcaniaethol, mae'r tîm ymchwil a arweinir gan Dr Sergei Shubin yn Abertawe yn ystyried realiti byw, a phrofiadau, ymfudwyr, ac yn helpu i ddatblygu polisi ac ymarfer perthnasol ac effeithiol.

NEWYDDION A DIGWYDDIADAU ERAILL

Athro Anrhydeddus yn ennill Gwobr Nobel mewn Ffiseg

Mae'r Athro Peter Higgs wedi ennill Gwobr Nobel mewn Ffiseg i gydnabod ei waith ar y boson annaliadwy enwog sy'n dwyn ei enw, ar ôl i wyddonwyr Sefydliad Ymchwil Niwclear Ewrop ddod o hyd i'r gronyn fis Gorffennaf diwethaf. Cynigiwyd y wobr iddo ef a Francois Englert ar y cyd.

Mae gan yr Athro Higgs gysylltiad cryf â Phrifysgol Abertawe, ac ym mis Gorffennaf 2008, rhoddwyd Cymrodoriaeth iddo yn ystod seremoni raddio Ysgol y Gwyddorau Ffisegol.

Mae wedi traddodi darlithoedd ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe yn ystod yr Wythnos Wyddoniaeth Genedlaethol, a dysgodd rai o aelodau cyfredol yr Adran Ffiseg pan oeddent yn fyfyrwyr ymchwil, gan gynnwys yr Athro Simon Hands FLSW, a fu'n gweithio yn Sefydliad Ymchwil Niwclear Ewrop gynt ond sydd bellach yn Gyfarwyddwr Ymchwil y Coleg Gwyddoniaeth.

Rheoli Amgylcheddol ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe yn achub y blaen

Ymweliad yr Academi Addysg Uwch â'r Adran Daearyddiaeth

Yr Athro Simon Hands yn mynd i Washington

Yn sgil archwiliad dwys am dridiau ar draws y campws, mae Prifysgol Abertawe wedi ennill gwobr PLATINWM EcoCampus, a dyfarnwyd ei bod wedi cyrraedd safon ryngwladol ISO 1400 am reoli ei systemau amgylcheddol. Abertawe yw'r brifysgol gyntaf yng Nghymru i ennill y wobr Platinwm - y wobr uchaf - a dim ond deuddeg sefydliad arall yn y Deyrnas Unedig sydd wedi'i hennill o'r blaen.  Mae hyn o gymorth i'r Brifysgol o ran cydymffurfio â'r gyfraith, o ran ei sgôr yn y Gynghrair Werdd, ac o ran ei Strategaeth Cynaliadwyedd.  Dyma'r safon ryngwladol gyntaf y mae'r brifysgol wedi'i bodloni ar draws yr holl Golegau ac adrannau gweinyddol.

Cynhaliodd yr hen arbenigwr pwnc 'Gwyddorau Daearyddiaeth, y Ddaear, ac Amgylcheddol' (Helen Walkington) o'r Academi Addysg Uwch, a'r arbenigwr newydd yn y maes (Anne Wheeler) ddigwyddiad yn yr Adran Daearyddiaeth ym mis Hydref. Roedd un cyflwyniad yn trafod yr adnoddau sydd ar gael i ddarlithwyr trwy'r Academi Addysg Uwch, a'r ail yn trafod "Myfyrwyr yn ymchwilwyr", gan drafod sawl ffordd y gellid integreiddio ymchwil a dysgu.  Roedd y rhain yn cynnwys addysgu am ganfyddiadau ymchwil, cysylltu myfyrwyr â phrosiectau ymchwil, a helpu myfyrwyr i gyflwyno canfyddiadau eu hymchwil eu hunain trwy bosteri, blogiau neu hyd yn oed trwy eu darlledu ar y teledu. Cafwyd presenoldeb da, gan ddangos ymrwymiad y Coleg Gwyddoniaeth i weithio gyda chyrff megis yr Academi Addysg Uwch trwy Academi Dysgu ac Addysgu Abertawe i godi ymhellach y safonau rhagorol ar draws y Coleg o ran yr addysgu a phrofiad y myfyrwyr.

Am yr ail flwyddyn yn olynol, gwahoddwyd Cyfarwyddwr Ymchwil y Coleg Gwyddoniaeth, Simon Hands, i fod yn aelod o'r Panel sy'n adolygu'r Rhaglen Ffiseg Gronynnau Ddamcaniaethol mewn prifysgolion UDA ar ran Adran Ynni UDA. Aeth i gyfarfod y Panel yn Washington DC yng nghanol mis Tachwedd.

Aduniad 25 mlynedd ar gyfer graddedigion Daeareg

Graddedig Daearyddiaeth yn Rownd Derfynol Ranbarthol Gwobr Daearegwr Gyrfa Gynnar

Dathliadau pen-blwydd John Matthews

Ar benwythnos olaf mis Medi, cynhaliwyd aduniad o fyfyrwyr Daeareg Prifysgol Abertawe a raddiodd ym 1988, 25 mlynedd yn ôl. Roedd tua 15 cyn-fyfyriwr yn gallu dod, o mor bell i ffwrdd ag Awstralia, ac roedd eraill yn ymddiheuro am nad ydynt yn gallu dianc rhag ymrwymiadau eu swyddi allweddol gyda chwmnïau rhyngwladol yn y diwydiant petrocemegol. Cawsant eu tywys o gwmpas Adeilad Wallace (neu Adeilad y Gwyddorau Naturiol, fel y'i gelwid tua diwedd y 1980au) gan Geraint Owen (sydd yn yr Adran Daearyddiaeth bellach) - ond gwrthod a wnaethant pan gynigiwyd cyfle iddynt wrando eto ar un o'u darlithoedd blwyddyn olaf ar waddodeg glastig uwch! Cawsant ddiwrnod hiraethus ar Benrhyn Gŵyr, ac maent yn gobeithio cynnal y digwyddiad eto yn 2018.

Cystadlodd Hannah Lee (graddedig Daearyddiaeth, 2013) yn rownd derfynol ranbarthol De Cymru'r Wobr Daearegwr Gyrfa Gynnar, a drefnwyd gan Gymdeithas Daeareg Llundain. Cyflwynodd grynodeb o'i thraethawd hir israddedig Daearyddiaeth, dan y teitl “Variability and facies control of soft-sediment deformation in the Applecross Formation of the late Proterozoic Torridon Group, Torridon, NW Scotland”, oedd wedi'i ganmol yn un o'r traethodau hir Daearyddiaeth Ffisegol a gyflwynwyd yn 2012-2013. Yn anffodus, ni lwyddodd Hannah i gyrraedd y rownd derfynol genedlaethol yn erbyn.  Roedd ganddi gystadleuwyr cryf, sef daearegwr diwydiannol a dau fyfyriwr PhD o Brifysgol Caerdydd; ond daeth yn ail cyfartal teilwng iawn.

Daeth staff a chyn-fyfyrwyr yr Adran Daearyddiaeth at ei gilydd i ddathlu pen-blwydd John Matthews, Athro Emeritws Daearyddiaeth Ffisegol. Mae John yn parhau i gyfrannu i'r cyrsiau maes israddedig yn Awstria a Mallorca, ac ers 42 mae wedi bod yn gwneud gwaith arloesol ar ddaearyddiaeth ffisegol de Norwy, trwy'r Cyrchoedd Ymchwil Jotunheimen. Mae hefyd yn Brif Olygydd y cylchgrawn rhyngddisgyblaethol "The Holocene".
